Zhytomyr is the capital of the Zhytomyr Oblast in northwestern Ukraine. It is situated on the banks of the Teteriv River, which is a branch running the right bank of the Dnepr River, and is 165 km to Kiev in the east. Founded in the ninth century, Zhytomyr is a hub of railroads and highways. Mechanical manufacturing (automatic machine tools, auto parts, metrical instruments, etc.) and linen textile are major industrial fields, which are followed by the industry of timber processing. Its special products are musical instruments, particularly its famous accordions. Zhytomyr also has botanical gardens and colleges and universities.
