Limerick

Limerick is the third largest city in Ireland, the largest one on the west coast, and part of the province of Munste. It is located at the head of the Shannon Estuary, neighboring Shannon Bay in the Atlantic extending into the inner land. The local government area of Limerick city is under the jurisdiction of Limerick City and County Council, with a population of roughly 100,000 in 2016 and of about 170,000 in the metropolitan area. In 2014, Limerick became the first cultural city of Ireland. Limerick means Barren Swamp in Irish, referring to a beach outside the city. There are such industries as flour, bacon processing, dairy products, wine making, distilling, and tanning, coupled with a hydropower station of the River Shannon nearby. And, the city once enjoyed a popular name for its ham among a number of agricultural cities in Irish history.
