Located in central Honshu Island, Japan, Gifu is part of Nagoya metropolitan area, one of the three largest metropolitan areas in Japan. It is an inland prefecture in central Japan – 300km to the west of Tokyo, 150 km to the east of Osaka, and 30 km to the north of Nagoya–surrounded by Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Fukui, Ishikawa, Toyama and Nagano. Gifu is a large prefecture as it occupies 2.8% of the territory of Japan, ranking seventh among all 47 prefectures in Japan. Nicknamed the “land of forests”, “land of landscape”, and “flying mountains and rich water”, Gifu ranks second in Japan with a forest coverage rate of 80%. Well-developed in forging, it sells various knives all over the country.
