Zhengzhou, Zheng for short, formerly known as the City of Commerce, is the capital of Henan Province, a mega-city and a central city of the city cluster of the Central Plains. It serves as the significant central city in Central China and major national comprehensive transport hub approved by the State Council. By 2018, the city covered a total area of 7,446 km² with the built-up area totaling 549.33 km² and had a permanent population of 10.136 million with the urban populace of 7.438 million or 73.38%. Zhengzhou sits in Central China, the lower reaches of the Yellow River, the hinterland of the Central Plains and the north of the central Henan. It neighbors Kaifeng in the east and Luoyang in the west, faces Xinxiang and Jiaozuo across the Yellow River in the north, and borders Xuchang and Pingdingshan in the south. The city is located in the region where the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River meet and the zone between the northeast wing of Funiu Mountains and Huang-Huai plains. Therefore, it slopes down from the west and the middle to the east, the northeast and the southeast. Zhengzhou features a continental monsoon climate in the northern temperate zone with four distinct seasons. Zhengzhou is the seat of Zhengzhou Joint Logistics Support Center, the Joint Logistic Support Force, and a national main hub of railway, aviation, power, post and telecommunications. It boasts the largest marshalling station of freight trains in Asia. The Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone is the one and only national comprehensive pilot zone of airport economy. The Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange is the first futures exchange in China. Zhengzhou is also a core component of China (Henan) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Zhengzhou is a significant place of origin for Chinese civilization, a famous Chinese historical and cultural city, one of the six major ruins areas supported by the country and a member of the League of Historical Cities. In this city that was chosen as the national capital five times, there are close to 10,000 immovable cultural relics, including 2 World Cultural Heritage Sites and 80 ones that are part of the 74 Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. The National Development and Reform Commission sent a reply letter in January 2017 to support Zhengzhou in building itself into a national central city. In 2018, Zhengzhou’s GDP reached 1.01433 trillion yuan.
