Xiamen

Xiamen, called Xia or Lu for short and known as Heron Island, is a sub-provincial city and a separate planning city of Fujian Province, and approved by the State Council of P. R. China, a special economic zone of China, and a central city, port and scenic tourist city along the southeast coast. As of 2018, the City had 6 districts under its jurisdiction, and covered an area of 2,089.39 km², including a built-up area of 388.58 km². Its permanent population reached 4.11 million with the urban populace of 3.662 million or 89.1%. Xiamen, located in the southeast of Fujian Province, East China, is a national pilot zone for overall reform, national logistics hub, southeastern international shipping center, pilot free trade zone and national marine economic development demonstration zone. Remarkably, it has developed into a demonstration zone for cooperation in emerging industries and modern service sectors, a regional financial service center and a trade center across the Strait. Xiamen consists of the Island (Xiamen Island), the offshore Gulangyu Island, the west coast Haicang Peninsula, the north shore Jimei Peninsula, the east coast Xiang'an Peninsula, Dadeng Island, Xiaodeng Island, the inland Tong'an, and Jiulong River, etc. It covers a land area of 1,699.39 km² and a sea area of more than 390 km². Like Zhangzhou and Quanzhou, it is part of south Fujian. By 2018, Xiamen ranked 2nd amid 36 provincial capitals and sub-provincial cities in terms of the composite credit index, ranked 1st among the sub-provincial cities in terms of business environment, ranked 5th nationally concerning the comprehensive competitiveness of foreign trade and 14th globally with regard to the container throughput at the Port of Xiamen. In 2018, Xiamen was reconfirmed to be the National Health City (District) and in the same year, its regional GDP hit 479.141 billion yuan, up 7.7% over the year earlier, ranking 3rd in Fujian Province. Xiamen ranked 6th on the list of China's Top 100 Cities for Foreign Trade of 2018 released in August 2019 by journal China Customs run by the General Administration of Customs, P. R. China, and ranked 158th amid 2019 Global Top 500 Cities released on 26 December 2019.
