Jilin

Jilin City is a prefecture-level city of Jilin Province, the province's major central city and new-type industrial base approved by the State Council of the P.R.C. Up to 2018, the city covered a total area of 27,120 km² with the built-up area totaling 189.04 km² and had a permanent population of 4.135 million including the urban populace of 2.189 million or 52.9%. The city is located in the central part of Jilin Province, Northeast China. It is China’s one and only city sharing the same name with the province where it is situated and major transport hub, central city and new-type industrial base in Jilin Province and Northeast China. The city is also reputed as the City of Rime Scenery, the Distinctive Tourist City in Northern China and the City of Calligraphy. Jilin City was included in the Forbes China's Best Cities for Business List, and the list of first comprehensive pilot areas of national new-type urbanization. The city of Jilin, as a famous Chinese historical and cultural city, is where the name of Jilin Province comes from. Jilin City was capital of Jilin Province. It is called Jilin Wula in Manchu (literally “City Along the River”). The city is known as the “River City” or the “River City of the North”, which is derived from “Like walls, warships gather in the river city” (“连樯接舰屯江城”) in a poem, titled Boating on the Songhua River (“松花江放船歌”), made by Kangxi Emperor during his eastern inspection tour in Jilin City. Furthermore, Jilin City is one of the birthplaces of the Manchu ethnic group and the second home to Peking Opera. In the city, there are 35 ethnic groups, like Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Hui, and Korean.
