Fuzhou, known as the City of the Banyan Tree, is the provincial capital of Fujian. It is one of the Central Cities in Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone and a Riverside Ecological Garden City as approved by the State Council. As of 2018, the city covered a total area of 11,968 km², including a built-up area of 315 km², and had a permanent population of 7.74 million with the urban population reaching 5.4412 million or 70.3%.
Fuzhou, situated in the east of Fujian Province, East China, lower reaches of the Minjiang River and coastal areas, is the center of politics, culture and transportation of Fujian Province. It not only is home to the ground force headquarters of the PLA Eastern Theater Command, but also serves as a gateway to the Maritime Silk Road and one of the first five treaty ports in China in modern times.

Fuzhou, near the mountain and by the river and with inland waterways densely distributed, boasts picturesque natural scenery. It is the hometown of academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and of Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as imperial scholars. A huge number of clans have gathered here since ancient times. In the now famous “Three Lanes and Seven Alleys”, many great figures in China’s modern history, like Yan Fu, Bing Xin, Chen Baochen, Lin Juemin, and Lin Zexu have resided. After the Opium War, Fuzhou was open earlier to the outside, because of which the positive reading atmosphere that one generation inspires another and the value of bravely going out to weather storms have been gradually formed.
