Changchun, “Chang” for short and called Xidu, Cha'achong and Huanglongfu in former times, is best known as the Spring City of Northland. It is the provincial capital of Jilin, and one of the core cities and an important industrial base in northeast China as approved by the State Council of P. R. China. As of 2018, the city covered an area of 20,593.5 km², including a built-up area of 519.04 km², and had a registered population of 7.513 million with 4.415 million or 58.8% residing in urban areas. Changchun is the geographical center of Northeast China and a central city in the Northeast Asia Economic Zone. As the earliest base for automobile industry and film production in new China, it is hailed as the “Detroit of China” and the “Oriental Hollywood”. At the same time, Changchun is the cradle of railway vehicle, photoelectric technology, applied chemistry, biological product and other industries, and the birthplace of China FAW Group Corporation, Changchun Film Studio, Changchun Passenger Car Factory (currently known as CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd.), Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun Institute of Biological Products, amongst others. Changchun, once the capital of Manchukuo, is a famous Chinese historical and cultural city with an impressive number of historical sites, industry heritage and cultural relics.
